Harper held onto Griffith's fingers tightly as they were lead back to the doctor's room by the assisting nurse/whatever and moved to sit down on the table like usual.
"The doctor will be right with you." The woman smiled and nodded, going to step back out and shutting the door after her.
Today was for that "second appointment" she had booked to figure things out and get a check up and tests done and while Harper was excited, she was somehow nervous too.
The past week had been just full of baby excitement and admittedly, a lot of belly cuddles and touches and talking about baby names already and just... talking about their new exciting future.
"We're got a really big baby already, you know that?" Harper said, looking over at Griffith. "I was looking up pictures and information and just... researching the other day at the library while waiting for you to get off work and I am so so so much bigger than everyone else I saw."
"Well, I mean, did you ever get a good look at Lawson? Or me? I mean, we're not little guys. Besides that, doesn't a bigger belly just mean our lil' one is growing just fine?" Griffith crooned while reaching out to gently caress at Harper's admittedly distended belly.
He recalled both his mother's pregnancy with Coco and Flora's pregnancy with Estella and, for both, could not remember either of them being so large so soon. Harper couldn't have been more than two months, and yet, her belly had swollen up to a decent and noticeable size already. He wasn't really that concerned, after all, he genuinely believed that her larger belly could only be a good thing for his baby growing inside of her.
As Griffith gently rubbed little circles at Harper's lower abdomen, there was a brief knock on the door before Doctor Kelly herself poked her head in.
"Why, hello, hello." She greeted, slipping inside. She immediately made a beeline for Harper, offering her hand out to her first. "How are we feeling today, Mom?" She asked.
Griffith couldn't help but grin giddily at that....Harper was gonna be a mom, and he was going to be a dad.
Harper gave her own happy smile at that, shaking her hand. "Good, I mean, other than my baby apparently wanting me to eat everything in sight." she laughed a little, putting a hand on her stomach as she looked down.
"Well, that's a good thing, you know? A lot of women have trouble keeping anything down at all." Doctor Kelly laughed, looking to Griffith then. "And you must be the proud daddy, considering all that grinning. Doctor Kelly." She offered her hand to Griff.
"Yeah, I'm one proud dad-to-be. Griffith Fitz." He introduced himself.
"Good, good. Alright, Miss Harper, if you don't have any immediate concerns you'd like us to look at first, we'll go ahead and just start you off with your standard, run-of-the-mill testing so we can see how far along your little, or, well, not so little one, is." Doctor Kelly chuckled before going over to the cabinets to pull out a little tape measurer. Immediately after turning back around, she gestured for Harper to pull up her shirt. "Let me just get some measurements on your belly before we get to the more tedious stuff." She nodded.
"Oh I never said they let me keep it down." Harper grinned a little and listened to the Doctor before reaching to pull the shirt she was wearing up enough. She'd been smart enough to wear one of Griffith's shirts since she didn't have any maternity shirts yet. "Not that I can think of, really." she said, looking at her.
"If your morning sickness ever gets out of hand, just let me know, we can get something to help you out." Doctor Kelly said as she gave a brief measurement of Harper's belly before tucking the tape away. "Hmm, you're fairly large for someone who's only...you said at the last apointment you thought you were only seven or eight weeks?"
"Oh, I know. Me and Griffith were just talking about that before you came in... I should only be, tops, eight or nine weeks now." Harper said before going to push her shirt back down. "And I mean, everyone on his side of the family is a behemoth except for his little brother so..."
"Well, despite how 'giant' his family is, Harper, dear, I just...I don't think you're only that far. Why, you must be at LEAST four months by now if we're just taking it by size." Doctor Kelly explained, which, the only reaction it drew from Griffith was a faltered smile as his stomach dropped.
Harper's brows furrowed, looking at her in confusion and a bit of concern. "Then there's something definitely wrong because we haven't been together that long. And I hadn't been with anyone for almost three years before him."
Doctor Kelly noted both Harper and Griffith's concerned expressions and gave a tight-lipped nod.
"I'm going to order you a sonogram then, so we can see what's going on." She said, standing up and collecting her files as she did so. She exitted the room quietly, leaving the duo alone.
Needless to say, Griffith looked beyond distressed and confused.
Harper reached up to run her fingers through her hair, inhaling deeply. What was wrong with her baby then? Could anything be wrong? What the hell was going on? "Fuck." she whispered, clicking her nails for a moment before turning to look at Griffith, biting at her bottom lip.
"I just...I just...Harp, I don't understand." Griffith said, looking up at Harper with his brows pinched into a flummoxed expression. "We haven't been together that long and, I mean, I trust that I'm the only guy, but...does tha tmean there's something...wrong?" He asked, his words choking at the end.
"I don't.. I don't know. There's nothing that I know of or can think of that could cause that really...?" Harper said anxiously. "It'll be okay. It'll be fine." she said, trying to reassure them both.
"Y-yeah, you're pretty healthy, so yeah, yeah." Griffith nodded, trying to show Harper he believed that, however, the tremor in his hand as he reached out to grab hers betrayed him.
It wasn't even a few minutes after having exited the room that Doctor Kelly returned with a cart carrying some sterilized equipment for the ultrasound machine in the corner of the examination room.
"Alright, Harper, just keep your shirt up and we're going to try and get to the bottom of this." Doctor Kellly assured.
Harper fixed her shirt so it was up enough and took a deep shaky breath. "Alright." she said quietly, trying to think of what in the world could be wrong or even just going on.
