Lowell took a nervous trembling breath as he stared up the driveway to the house, the straps of his raggedy backpack clutched in one hand tightly. He and Digby had just gotten off a bus and walked their entire way to this damned address- the one they had found under this guys... their fathers name.
For the both of them, it was nerve wracking. It was so anxiety inducing that Lowell had slept like crap and had felt like throwing up for most of the day and really... it was a last resort in some aspects. He and Digby had been given up as infants and had never known their bioparents.
Had never known the reason why they were given up, nor had their bio-parents tried to get into contact with them, as far as they knew. Their last home was some shitty group half way home like thing and when they said it was shitty... it was really shitty.
But then, most of the places they'd been tossed in had been. It had always, ultimately, been him and Digby. The devil twins, the troublemakers, the lost boys without a Peter Pan or Wendy.
"Okay. This is it." Lowell said to Digby, going to unzip his backpack to get the legal papers out that he had managed to nick on their way out from running away from the group home.
Digby looked up at the house with anxiety roiling in the pit of his belly, nervous like his twin. Sure, he had been on board with this plan in the beginning, hell, the whole running away from the group home aspect was basically HIS plan, but now that they were here, minutes away from meeting their birth father...he wasn't so sure this was a good idea.
After all, they'd been given up for a reason in the first place.
Digby and Lowell had never known anything about their parents. They had just been told that they were brought into the system by choice, presumably because their parents were too "young" or in "trouble" (they'd heard it all through the years) to take care of them, althhough, part of Digby had always wondered if maybe their parents just didn't love them. He never really brought up that idea to his twin, not wanting to hurt Lowell in any capacity, but it was a thought that he mulled over frequently and had for quite some time personally.
As a child, the idea of his parents willingly giving him up out of lack of affection broke his heart, but as he got older it just made him bitter until it only made him mad until it filled him with a great rage that incited frequent bouts of trouble by the way of arguments with the "parents" at the group home, fist fights with the other kids, and, more and more these days...just running away. Though, of course, his twin often came to his rescue and brought him home, this time, however, he'd brought him with him when he decided he wanted to know WHY they'd been given up by their parents once and for all.
He bit at his lip before glancing over at his twin.
"You still want to do this?" He asked, though, the question was partly for himself too.
Lowell paused as he gripped onto the papers, crumpling in his nervous grasp. He frowned, thinking of all the restless nights worrying over what his twin was going to do next, who they were going to go live with next, what Digby's next big rebellion would be and when it would go too far- when he wouldn't be able to come to the rescue. "Yeah, I do." he said, more firmly, trying to be hopeful and as brave as he felt before.
He threw his backpack back on his shoulder and held out his free hand for Digby, taking a huge deep breath. "So lets just... go. He's just a human."
"Your positive attitude is so helpful right now, Digs." Lowell gave a very small faint grin before going to head up with him, heart pounding in his chest.
"Sorry, I know, I know, I just...I donno, what if he's shitty? Then what?" Digby murmured lightly as they headed up to the house. He didn't want to stress his twin out further.
"I.. I don't know, Digs, but I'll figure it out." Lowell promised, his chest a little tight from stress as he headed up to the house with Digby. He headed up the porch with him quietly, swallowing hard. "Okay... so... here we go." he breathed before reaching up to press the doorbell.
Digby tensed slightly, his hand tightening on Lowell's as he looked to the door in waiting.
Inside the house was none other than their father, Griffith, getting ready for his day. He was quietly making himself breakfast, a menial task consisting of frying an egg and making toast with peanut butter. It had been a "crowd" favorite between his younger siblings and Darcy since it was something easily made before school and maybe it was the loneliness that came with the now empty house, but in recent years it had become his go to breakfast.
Then again...he'd been lonely before everyone had moved out.
He supposed he'd been struck with his sense of personal isolation when everything hit the fan all those years ago. When he and Harper had to give up their boys, when he was forced to give up Harper. Though it had been almost fifteen years, he'd still never really recovered from the emotional devastation of it all. Of course, there were happy moments in his life since then, like the day each of his siblings and Darcy graduated or even just days off and holidays every so often, but over all things had been...sad. Lonely.
He looked towards the front foyer when he heard the doorbell. Through the curtained windows in the door, he could see two figures standing there. Dixon and Darcy usually just let themselves in whenever the came to town, Coco too, so he wasn't sure who it could be. He turned off the heat, to prevent frying his egg too much, and headed towards the front door.
Lowell tensed at the sound of the mans voice and reached over, ringing the doorbell again in response, his hand shaking and his other tightening on Digby's grip as well. What were they supposed to say? He had rehearsed it so many times in his head before... and now it had all just vanished.
Griffith made a slight face at the response and went to answer the door then. He furrowed his brow in further confusion when he saw two young boys standing there.
Meanwhile, Digby looked up at the man, his father, in complete...well, something like awe.
This was him.
"So? What do you want?" Griffith asked, eyeballing the boys.
Lowell took a deep trembling breath and stared up at the man with slight, well, awe as well. In so many ways... they looked just like him. He held out the legal papers with a large gulp. "We um- we.. we.." he sputtered. "He's Lowell and I'm di-No, I mean- I'm Lowell and he's Digby and we're.. we're sorta looking for our um.. our.. our parents."
Digby's hand trembled as he tightened his grasp on Lowell's.
Griffith felt his heart skip a beat in his chest at just the mention of the names. His hands trembled, but he reached out to grab the papers. He mulled over them, only for a second. He could see the boys' full names printed out, along with his full name and Harper's too. Amidst the documents, there were birth certificates as well as two copies of tiny footprints.
And newborn photos, not that Griffith needed much more documentation than just the names and those tiny prints.
He looked up at the boys, jaw trembling.
"Y-you're...you're-"
"Your kids." Digby finished, watching the man's reaction in befuddlement himself.
Lowell's brows furrowed and he stared at the man and his reaction, confused and bewildered as well. If they had been given up- why did the man look like he had just found what he wanted most? "W-We just.. we w-want answers and.." he trailed off. What else did they want? Well... he knew what he wanted but he wasn't sure what was realistic and what Digby ultimately wanted too.
