Mistakes happen, but it isn't often that mistakes yield as good of a reward as Delcan Fitz... or so Dixon Fitz would boast. He of course regretted many things that transpired as a result of that drunken night in Ireland, but the birth of his eldest son was certainly no regret of his. Dixon was forever grateful for the gift of his son, finding no greater reward in his life than any of his children and Declan in particular.
Declan was always a lovable soul who treated everyone and everything with a softness and a thoughtfulness his older sister nor his younger siblings ever did. Even as he grew older, he maintained that tenderness nurtured by his mother, Dana, and often showed that tenderness towards her despite how much he was picked on for being a "momma's boy" as a result. And more than kind and gentle, Declan was growing up to be a handsome lad, the spitting image of his father except for the thick slick of dark hair that came from his father's father, just like those sweet baby blues. Like his father, and so unlike his uncles and grandfather, Declan was still quite small for his age, waiting and counting on a growth spurt that, given his father's luck, would probably wait until his last year of high school and would even then lack impressiveness.
Though he was as handsome as Dixon and as kind and gentle as Dana, there were still inklings that only Dixon knew to be from Declan's birth mother. Like the way his ears stuck out a bit far that made him look a bit mousy and that much more endearing, or the constellation of freckles that danced across the bridge of his nose and on his shoulder when he got a bit too much sun, or even those sweeping lashes of his that almost looked fake they were so long. But despite those little reminders, Dixon was almost sure that those were the extent of any reminders of Anne he'd have to deal with... until today.
Dixon was out back with Declan, helping the young boy practice his pitching since baseball tryouts would be coming up soon, when the landline inside the house began ringing almost urgently somehow.
Dana and Dixon's little family was basically complete after all these years, what with Declan, Dixie and the miracle twins, Dalton and Daisy.
And Dana was just unbelievably happy with her life. Dixie was still a rough and tough tomboy but she was a damn good older sister to her siblings, despite the rocky start and probably the biggest 'daddy's girl' there ever was.
Dana was finding work here and there for acting, which paid well enough to help support them. And her and Dixon's relationship was as strong as ever, thankfully, after all they had been through.
"Mommy, phone!" Dalton chirped as he grabbed the phone from it's charging base in the hallway and ran it into the living room to his mother, where she was folding laundry.
Dana glanced over and smiled. "Thanks, sweetheart. Why don't you go outside and play with Deccy and Daddy, huh?"
"Okie." he went to trot off out back while Dana answered the call.
"Oh, hello. One moment please, he's just outside, this is his wife speaking- may I ask who's calling?" Dana asked, putting the towel in her lap aside and going to get up to head out back.
"I'm...um...this is Lewis Calhoun. I'm calling on behalf of... Annie, uh, Anne Calhoun." The man, Lewis, spoke with clear intention of avoiding misstep.
Dana paused and reached up to push her hair back awkwardly. "Oh um. Okay, one moment please..." she repeated, frowning a little and headed out back, pulling on her flats by the door and across the yard to the boys, pulling the phone away. "Uh, Dixon? Phone, baby."
Dixon was in the middle of showing Declan and Dalton both how to wind up for a "good pitch" when Dana approached. He was all grins until he noted the little frown on Dana's face and the phone in hand.
"I'll be back in a minute, boys." He said to the twosome before going over to his wife. "D, is everything alright?"
"Someone is calling on behalf of Anne, for you.." Dana said quietly, brows furrowing together in confusion and well.. a bit of concern as she held out the phone.
Dixon felt his heart give a nervous drop. He hadn't heard from Anne since...well, since everything. She'd signed off on all her parental rights without so much as a protest, in fact, she seemed to be quite willing. It wasn't as if she spent any time bonding with Declan after all. As soon as he was popped out, she didn't so much as hold him let alone even look at him really. She had told him it wasn't out of meanness or spite, but she simply didn't feel that maternal urge in her. She said that Declan simply didn't feel like hers, which was fine enough to Dixon, he could be all his then.
So it was surprising to hear even her name after all this time.
He furrowed his brow in concern and confusion and took the phone.
"Hello?" He greeted, hesitant.
"Is this Dixon Fitz?" Lewis spoke.
"Uh, yes....you're calling for Anne?" Dixon asked.
"Ah...yes. You don't know me, but I'm Anne's brother, Lewis." Lewis paused and gave a weak but audible swallow. "Listen, Anne's...she's real sick, some sort of cancer or other, I don't really know myself, she hardly lets them tell me anything. But...I know it's terminal and she's not going to last very long."
Dixon felt his stomach drop and he glanced towards Declan, who was in the middle of repeating the windup Dixon had shown him, doing it slow so he could show Dalton. Declan's mom was...dying?
"She told me about your boy...her boy too, innit? Declan? I swear, we didn't know anything about him a-and I suppose rightly so, she never wanted kids and it's her business after all, but... I know it's asking a lot, but I feel like I should ask for her, and for your boy too, if it was possible for you to...come to Ireland, see her one more time. I know you don't owe her anything, or me, but-"
"Y-you're asking a lot, you know?" Dixon interjected, swallowing thickly. "I...my boy's got a mom and we don't...we don't talk about Anne." Not that Dixon knew enough about her to talk about her anyway.
"I know, I know, believe me, I know." Lewis sputtered, his voice cracking. "B-but if you could just find it in your heart...she should see him one more time...he should see her too."
Dixon was quiet for a moment, taking in a deep breath through his nostrils.
"I'd have to talk to him about it...I won't make him go if he doesn't want to." Dixon conceded then.
"Of course." Lewis quickly agreed. "I-I can give you my number, you can call any time to let me know what you decide."
"Yeah, alright." Dixon said, reaching up to rub at his forehead.
After taking Lewis's number and putting it into his cellphone, they said their parting words, and Dixon hung up the landline with a heavy sigh and reached up to rub at his temples.
"I...um...boys, me and Momma are gonna go inside for a minute, I'll be back, okay?" Dixon said to the two boys. He looked to Dana. "Let's go talk inside." He added quietly.
Declan watched his parents with furrowed brows but directed his attention back to Dalton, going to show him the windup again.
Meanwhile, Dixon opened up the backdoor and headed into the house, taking a shaky breath as he almost immediately covered up his face with his palms and doubled over.
"Fuck, D....fuck this...fuck." He murmured quietly, his voice trembling.
"Jesus...it's Anne...fuck..." Dixon heaved a heavy breath as he shook his head in his hands before going to stand up straight again. "Fuck...she's sick, D. Like...really sick."
