It'd been almost two whole years since Coco had last seen home and while she had her reasons for avoiding it like she did, she couldn't deny that now she was more than just a little excited to be back. She hadn't realized how much she'd missed the quaint small town life versus the busy hustle and bustle of city life, how much she'd missed walking into a store and being greeted like one of the family over the constant anonymity that came with living somewhere like New York.
She'd missed home, and she hadn't even known it.
She had just pulled in during the early hours of the morning with her friend and partner from the dance troupe she'd been working with, Tom, and after crashing out on the pull-out couch for a few hours, they were rousted by Griff and Harper's ever-excitable kids, who were just pleased as peaches to see their auntie. She got up and went to help Harper with breakfast while Tom occupied the kids, sharing stories with her over coffee. Harper had informed her that Griffith would be home in the next few days, as always, just in time for Christmas. Meanwhile, she'd been told Dixon would be showing up any time considering he rarely missed a meal with his brother's family.
And then there was Darcy...
Coco would have been lying if she said she hadn't thought of Darcy at least three times a day since having split up with him, however, that didn't mean she was quite ready to see him.
After all, she'd broken his heart, just as she'd broken hers.
After two pots of coffee, Coco went to braid her hair in the bathroom before returning to help set up the table, listening as Dixon made his loudly obnoxious entrance, beckoning their brother's kids to him as soon as he entered the front door.
"Hey, Uncle Dixon!" Lowell grinned, rushing over with Harlow. Harlow waved, reaching up to turn on his hearing aid.
Darcy sighed as he drove by the Fitz' road again, not wanting to turn onto it. Not sure he was ready to see Coco, not sure if he was ready to find out what rumours were true, what weren't.
TMZ's PICTURES OF COCO FITZ' NEW BOYFRIEND? REASON WHY SHE LEFT DARCY HUNT INSIDE!
Coco Fitz' new dancer boyfriend! Hunt is devastated!
All-star Hunt's ex possibly pregnant with new boyfriend's baby!!
While he was OVERLY sure the last one was a lie, and really, fuck TMZ, the other two were... possible. It was very possible that maybe Coco had found happiness else where. Had really moved on, had started new. Which meant... he wasn't a part of that. Not anymore.
And the thought of THAT, made him feel sick. He wasn't over Coco by a long shot. God, the past almost two years had been fucking awful. He'd been so broken hearted that he had to take a break from baseball for a while.
His team had been, miraculously understanding while the rest of the media hadn't been. There had been so many theories and rumours thrown about that it had made his head spin. He had spent a lot of time back home with his sister before leaving to Ireland for a few months.
Coco had left to find a purpose and her life.
And Darcy had felt like he lost his.
And because of all of that, it was probably the hardest thing he could do to turn his car onto the road. Everyone was going to be there today, except for Griffith and of course.. he wouldn't have to stay long right? He could go back to his place there in Shelbyville, his hotel at least and he could...
Drown in his misery?
Yeah, that sounded about right.
He groaned as he came up on the house, contemplating just speeding off down the road instead.[/i]
"Hey kids! Hey!" Dixon cheered, crouching down to meet Harlow and Lowell, giving their cheeks sloppy kisses. "Happy Almost-Christmas!"
---
"Hey, Dixie! Round up the brats, breakfast is ready!" Coco called as she helped Harper carry over vast amounts of breakfast food to feed her 'growing boys'.
"Happy Almost-Christmas!" Lowell grinned and then glanced over when he heard his aunt. "We can round up ourseeeeeeelves." he whined and looked for his twin brother and his younger sister before giving a loud sharp whistle, like his father had taught him. Harlow jumped, grimacing.
"Oh. Sorry..." Lowell grimaced as well.
Darcy sat in the drive way for a moment, taking a few deep breaths. He wasn't sure if he wanted to be here or not, really. "It's just Coco. Fucking, man up." Darcy muttered to himself as he turned off the car and went to get out.
He looked... tired. Really. He had left his hair grow out and got an undercut, a bit like Griffith had done when they had all first met. He had faint circles under his eyes from staying up to late, often and from stress.
His smiles never quite reached his eyes anymore and while he still had a good weight and mass, like he had to for work, he just... seemed different.
Quieter.
He cleared his throat and reached up to rub behind his glasses as he shut the car door with his other hand and went to head up to the house and in.
"Then don't be rotten and round up yourseeeeeeeelves." Coco chuckled and rolled her eyes. She glanced up as Tom entered the room, his smile as 'charming' looking as ever. She grinned back at him. "You're in for a treat, my sister-in-law can cook."
"Oh yeah?" Tom smirked, stepping over to place a 'subtle' hand at the small of Coco's back, nothign Coco would really read into, at least not from him.
Coco had met Tom back when she was recruited by their dance troupe. They were almost instantly paired up, their director noting their undeniable chemistry in their performances. He was a handsome man, tall and lean with a head full of dark curls and stormy, grey eyes, but he wasn't exactly someone Coco found herself interested in regardless of his good looks. She only saw him as a friend...despite what the rumors said.
Dixon looked down at Harlow, smiling lightly as he reached down to tousle his hair lightly.
"Loud." Harlow said, the pronunciation wrong but he wanted to make sure his brother could hear it as he glared at him.
Lowell looked guilty and ran off to get his other siblings.
Harlow turned to look at Dixon then, hands coming up to sign something but he looked past Dixon's shoulder and grinned widely and very enthusiastically signed 'uncle' and 'baseball' before going to dart past Dixon, having spotted Darcy come in behind him.
Dixon turned around as Harlow rushed passed him and he gave a bright grin when he saw Darcy enter, although...that grin dimmed when he saw how worn out Darcy looked.
"Hey, man...how're you?" He asked, turning to meet him.
Darcy oomf'd as Harlow tackled into him for a hug. He squeezed the boy tight and ruffled his hair, signing a hello to him before looking up at Dixon and managed a smile. "Hey Dixie. I'm alright. You? Long time no see."
Darcy smiled some and nodded, ruffling Harlow's hair again and talking/signing to him for a moment before Harlow ran off to get his mother. "That's good." he said to Dixon, looking back up at him. "Well, I mean. I'm staying at a hotel here in Shelbyville over Christmas so I'm here for a bit."
"Well, we'll have to definitely get together then. I've got some...well, pretty big news, but I'd like to share it wit you first since, yanno, you're still my best friend." Dixon gave a smile and shrug.
"...I'm both touched and concerned, all at once." Darcy chuckled, reaching over to throw his arm around Dixon's shoulders. "C'mon, I'd better go see Harper."
"You can have Darcy time all you want, Dixie-poo." Darcy joked in a baby voice, reaching over to pinch his cheek with a little grin as he ushered him towards the kitchen.
"Hold you to that, babycakes." Dixon made kissy lips at Darcy with a grin, a grin that disappeared out of anxiety as soon as they entered the kitchen and he watched Coco bounce over towards the dining room table. Of course he knew she'd be there, after all, they were family, but he hadn't really thought about, well, this.
