August, 2007.
Shelbyville, Indiana.

It wasn't like Harper wanted to move into a new town, to a new school, to new people that would pick on her for her secondhand clothes, bruises and she was used to girls refusing to be her friends before she was "weird" or too "boyish" so she decided that didn't effect her much anymore. (It did.)

So she just stuck around boys if she could and would try to play baseball after school or try to get on teams, even though her parents wouldn't let her and she decided that didn't bother her much anymore either, because being on a team didn't matter much to her. (It did.)

It wasn't like Harper wanted to go to a public school, or any school for that matter, where she had no friends and would have to worry about her little brother in a separate school and wonder if he was doing okay, if he'd get off of school earlier than her, if her parents would remember to feed him.

Of course, that wasn't normal worries for a little girl but they were her worries thanks to her situation with her parents, which didn't seem to be getting any better, just worse. They had little money as of lately because of their moving and because of her parents "habits" but of course, her little seven year old brother, Darcy, had done his best to reassure his sister before now their sixth day at the new school, his words giving a slight whistle at the ends because of his missing front teeth.

But that didn't mean Harper was ANY happier, especially since she was sitting alone at lunch, listening to everyone else laugh with friends and fool around. AGAIN. She tried to decide that it didn't bother her as much as she originally thought it did. (It definitely did.)

She didn't understand why her parents were focused on her getting a "good education", when they weren't focused on anything else that could benefit her and her brother.

She was pretty sure they just wanted them out of the house as long as possible so they could enjoy their "high" before the kids got home and somehow, got in the way of that. Somehow.

It wasn't fair, in Griffith's opinion, that while he and Darcy "rotted away" at school, Lawson was getting to work on cars all day at the shop (despite him having put in his fair share of school and already have graduated). It was even less fair that Lawson got to spend all of his time with their dad, which was a note that even little Dixie could agree on.

From a very early age, Griffith had shown a natural talent for mechanical work, which pleased his father to no end, which in turn pleased him to no end. Every weekend, after he helped his mother around the house with his fair share of chores, he'd pack Dixon up in their Radio Flyer wagon and haul him down to the shop (which usually ended up as a catastrophic crash) so he could tinker with whatever his dad gave him while Lawson minded Dixon, watching their youngest brother chase bugs and other little critters that managed to get into the back office of the shop through the open door (the door he usually left open). Later on, his mother would bring down snacks, they'd all have a late lunch together. Sometimes, after they ate, they'd walk down to the baseball field, throw and hit some balls around, which everyone, including their mother, enjoyed doing.

In Griffith's opinion that was the life, not being in school where all the kids were dumb and didn't know about cars or how to play baseball like Mack Fitz.

He just wanted to be in the shop, just wanted to help out already, which, his mother said he was doing in the way of minding Dixon at school, who was at the brunt end of frequent taunts and even physical jabs because of his small stature, glasses, and overall softened features. He supposed that was helping out in a way, because he didn't want Dixon to get beat up of course, but he didn't exactly like hauling his baby brother around, holding his hand at lunch while all the other kids laughed at both of their expense.

"What a little snot nosed brat, clinging onto his boyfriend like that."

"Gross, two boys, holding hands?"

"I bet you the little one still pees his pants, huh? Piss baby! Piss baby!"

Dixon's little lips quivered and he went to pull his hand away, however, Griffith tightened his grasp and continued to tug him along.

"C'mon, Mom will be mad if you don't eat lunch again." Griffith scolded, toting the younger Fitz brother towards an empty table to sit at.

He managed to get Dixon's lunch set up (he even removed the cap to his juice because it was "too hard" for him to twist off) and was just digging into his when he felt a fat finger jabbing him in the back.

"Hey, Fitz, you gonna give your boyfriend a big fat smooch too while you're at it?" A boy laughed, a group of his friend cackling behind him.

"Yeah, I hear you guys hold hands all the time like a couple of hobos." Another (clearly unintelligent) boy grinned.

"He's my baby brother, what's wrong with holding his hand? Especially if it keeps you guys away from him." Griffith said, irritated with his and Dixon's "guests".

"Psh, 'keeps us away'? Like you're going to stop us from doing anything?" The fat boy asked shoving at Griffith's shoulder.

Griffith's shoulder barely recoiled from the shove, however, his face pinched tighter in irritation as he proceeded to rise from his seat, showing off the little bit of height he had on each of the boys.

"I don't know, it's kept you away before." He said, shoving the boy back.

Harper looked up from the food she had been picking at (really, was that even an actual brownie? It looked and felt like brown rubber) when she picked up her head to look towards where some commotion was beginning, her brows furrowing.

She wasn't really sure what was going on but something in her gut told her to get up and go over, questioning why she really was. It wasn't like she wanted to get in the middle of a fight but most of the kids here were idiots and picked on someone for the stupidest things. She'd know.

She pushed her way through the building crowd, cursing her height quietly.

"You wanna shove me again, Fitz?" The fat kid threatened, trying to puff his chest out in intimidation, something that hardly worked considering it only made his belly look bigger.

"I don't know, do I?" Griffith said, hardly looking intimidated, or interested in this altercation really.

The fat kid's nostrils flared and he pulled a fist back and swung towards Griffith, drawing a panicked cry from Dixon as it connected with Griffith's face, hitting him square in the nose. Dixon scrambled from his seat and reached up to look at Griffith's face, trembling when he caught a bit of red on his fingertips.

While most would be stunned by this, Griffith's immediate reaction wasn't in fact surprise or shock, but rather...irritation.

"You stupid fat pig." Griffith seethed.

"HEY." Harper shouted, pushing her way through the crowd, eyes on the fat kid. "That was a bitch throw, you fat cry baby!" she said sharply, not even caring at the second about the kid who had been hit and she knew she had a mouth on her. Blame her parents.

"Tch- it's the weird short girl!" One of the boys laughed, eying Harper. "What are you gonna do from all the way down there, huh?"

Griffith had reached up to wipe at his nose with the back of his sleeve, poised to readily fight back, however, he paused and blinked as a smallish girl called out and interrupted the altercation. Just looking at her, she couldn't be older than Dixon...maybe even younger.

"Hey, hey, hey, don't get in the middle of this." Griffith scolded, not wanting to be held liable for anything to happen to the girl.

Fitz rule number one was honor women alike with high regard, or rather, they didn't get hurt, not on your watch.

Harper huffed at being scolded and treated like some foolish little kid, shaking her head and stepped closer towards the boys. "What's the matter, scared of the new weird girl?" she taunted, not one to throw a first punch.

"What're you talking about? We don't fight little brats who don't know their place." The boy scoffed but stepped back when Harper stepped closer.

"Afraid I'll go all crazy on you?" she taunted more.

"Hey, what'd I just say." Griffith scolded again, this time, however, reaching out to grab at the girl's wrist, trying to stop her advance before someone decided they indeed were not afraid of her and decided to hit her for her mouth.

Harper forced herself not to reach around and pop Griffith for grabbing her, as a natural instinct to and stared down the group still instead, lips pursed.

"Hmph. C'mon, this brat is taking all the fun out of it." The boy scowled and went to turn around to leave back to their table.

Griffith glared at the backs of the boys as they retreated back to their table, one hand still wrapped around the girl's wrist while he raised the other to cover his face, which had become drenched completely with blood below his nose.

"Stupid..." He uttered after the boys.

Harper waited until they were gone before turning around to look at Griffith, frowning and brows furrowing. "You need to see the school nurse. Or... I've got a first aid in my bag." she said, figuring he'd find that weird. Anyone would. But she was always prepared with little things.

Griffith looked at the girl, a bit befuddled, not about the first aid kid, but mostly about her concern. He didn't even know her.

"Why are you fussin'?" He asked, still covering his face so she couldn't see his pursed lips if she tried.

"..'Fussin''?" Harper repeated, brows furrowing in confusion then as she stared up at him with a frown still, going to take a step back. She figured he just wanted her to leave back to her table and that was fine.

"Yeah, fussin'? It's nothing, just a bloody nose." Griffith explained, watching the girl's expression closely as she moved back a step. "I'll be fine, honestly." He said, trying to keep his irritation to a minimum, after all, it wasn't the girl's fault. "Um...thanks though, for stepping in, I guess." He said.

"Yeah, no problem... I was just offering 'cause you're bleeding everywhere and it'll probably scare him." Harper pointed at the littler boy that Griffith had been sitting with before she gave a small shrug and went to step back for her table.
