"Oh my God, Harper! Harper! They're perfect!" Griffith had taken to standing, watching as the nurses took the babies over to their respected stations and jostled them about, cleaning them up and getting them inspected. He couldn't fight the large, paternal grin on his face as his eyes pricked with tears.
His babies were here, they were alive, they were healthy, they were HERE.
He looked down to Harper, hoping to see her sharing a similar reaction, however, his face falling a bit as he noticed she was struggling to stay conscious.
"H-Hey...Hey Harper...Harp, baby-"
"I'm going to need assistance over here!" The doctor hastily announced then, changing the mood in the room completely. While the babies were being bundled and tended to by two nurses, the initial group had taken to flocking over to Harper, going on to assist the doctor.
"W-what's going on? Harper? Harper!" Griffith sputtered, eyes wide as he looked down at Harper, watching as one of the nurses pulled down the oxygen mask (which Harper had used on and off throughout labor), placing it over her face, another went to helping the doctor, uttering between them, while another came over and grabbed Griff's arm, gently coaxing him out of his seat. "W-woah, woah! What's going on! I-I-I'm not going a-anywhere! What's going on!" He tried to pull his arm free from the nurse's grasp, but she had a vice grip.
"Sir, we just need you to step out while we give your girlfriend treatment. It looks like there's some minor excessive bleeding, but I assure you she'll be fine." The nurse explained, guiding Griffith from the room.
"B-But, no, no, I can't leave her!" He shouted, his cries mixing with the sounds of his babies.
Oh god, his babies, he couldn't leave them either.
He looked over to their respective stations, getting one last glimpse at them before looking to Harper for one final look, and was forcibly removed from the room.
It had been quite a few good hours since Harper gave birth to her and Griffith's perfect two little baby boys and she hadn't woken since. The doctor and nurses reassured everyone that it was perfectly normal and that Harper was perfectly fine, just absolutely exhausted and her body was taking all the time it could to heal and that she'd be awake as soon as her body felt capable.
Which was exactly the case. Harper was finally starting to stirr in bed, opening her eyes a little and looking around the room blurrily. All she could remember was the shrill cry of babies, HER babies, her little ones. And she couldn't see them anywhere in the room.
Griffith had returned to Harper's room once the doctor and nurses allowed him to. They'd explained that she'd simply lost a good amount of blood due to the nature of her labor, but after everything was said and done, she'd be just fine. Griff, however, being the worrywart he tended to be, had immediately perched himself by her bedside and could not be budged, even when another doctor was sent by the police to check him out after Kasper's assault. After waiting for Harper to wake as long as he did, however, he eventually allowed himself to rest his head on her mattress, one hand tangled with hers while the other he used as a pillow for his cheek, and fell asleep.
Griffith could feel Harper stirring in bed and he immediately came to, blinking himself as he lifted his head to look up at Harper.
"Hey, baby...fuck...I'm so glad you're okay." He said, his voice groggy from his nap.
Harper twisted slightly to look around the room again, brows furrowing tightly. "The.. the babies, Griffith, where.." she started quickly, the beeping of her heart monitor speeding up a little.
"Hey, hey, hey," Griffith quickly reached out to grab at Harper's face, his thumb running over her cheek. "Baby, they're fine, they're perfectly fine. The nurses took them to the nursery until you were up." Griffith shook his head, a small little smile on his face. "I didn't feel right being the first one to hold 'em or anything. I wanted you to be the first one."
Harper looked up at him, searching his face for the hint of something even slightly wrong. "..They're fine? Perfectly fine?" she repeated, as if just to make sure. "How big are they? What.. what.. what genders?"
"Perfectly fine." Griffith repeated, nodding, his smile soft and warm. "Oh, Harp...we've got two boys. Two identical boys. And trust me, baby, you don't want to know how much those precious, little behemoths weighed just yet." Griffith chuckled, continuing to stroke at Harper's face. "Do you want me to go get a nurse to bring them in?" He asked.
Harper's whole body seemed to relax and she took a deep breath, eyes already wet with tears as she nodded quickly. "Oh god, yes. Please. I wanna see our b-boys." she laughed, reaching up to wipe at her eyes with her free hand.
"You got it, baby." Griffith smiled, leaning over to kiss Harper's cheek. He released her hand and rose from his seat, stretching his stiff muscles for a moment before making his way out into the hallway, catching a nurse.
He explained that Harper was awake and wanted to see their babies, he also asked that her status be relayed to her doctor and their still-waiting family.
Almost as soon as Griffith returned to the room and settled back down in his chair, there was a brief knock at the door and in came a nurse wheeling two little carts.
"Hunt and Fitz?" She asked, smiling.
"That's us." Griffith said, his whole face lighting up when he listened to two squeaky simpers coming from the carts.
"I've got your two little ones here for you, wide awake and ready to meet you." She said, wheeling over the carts to the bedside. She looked between Griffith and Harper. "Who's holding them first? Mom?"
"Yes, yes." Griffith said, eagerly trying to get a good look at his boys in their carts.
"Alright, let's get you fellas to your mom then." The nurse went ahead and took one baby from his cart, leaning over to help get him situated in Harper's arms.
Harper got the first little baby situated carefully and then the second one as well, eyes wide and adoring and full of tears as she looked down at them. "Hey baby, hey... which one of you caused momma so much trouble, huh?" she crooned, voice shaking from crying. And for once today, it was happy tears.
The nurse excused herself, wanting to offer Griffith and Harper some alone-time with their babies. She did, however, tell Griff if they needed any assistance to come get someone, which Griffith barely acknowledged as he was so transfixed on the baby boys nestled in Harper's arms.
These babies were undeniably his with some of his strongest features standing out, including the delicate upturn of his nose. Their eyes appeared light, however, he recalled reading somewhere that babies' eyes changed color. He also noticed their hair was outstandingly light, which, considering both his and Harper's hair was darker, was strange, but he supposed his mother had been a blond, and all of his siblings were too.
All in all, they were beautiful
"Look at them, fuck, just look at them, Harp...you did good with these ones, so good." Griffith smiled, his lips trembling slightly.
Harper sniffled and gave a light laugh, looking down at her sons as they squirmed a bit and gave quiet little whines before finally settling down. "They're even more beautiful than I had imagined." she laughed a bit, sniffling again. "Hi little birds, hi babies.."
"Tell me about it." Griffith smiled, hovering over her to get a better look at the both of them. He watched their little legs and arms flail, eyes squinted in the brightness of the room. He made a point to reach out and gently stroke the tip of his finger over each of their profiles, memorizing the gentle curvatures of their faces. The whole time, he couldn't help grinning like a fool, even as he looked up to Harper, he couldn't stop. "Thank you, Harp, thank you so much for making me a dad, for working so hard to make sure these little guys could get here nice and healthy. Thank you." His words trembled as he tried to hold back a giddy cry.
Harper gave a shaky laugh and shook her head slightly, trying to blink back more tears. "Thank you, Griff. For making me a mother and protecting us and j-just... g-god, I can't believe they're finally here."
"Me neither, but hot damn...look at them. They're here and they're absolutely perfect." Griffith said, smiling as his fingerpad gently glided over one of the baby's lips, to which he let out a little "gasp" and rounded his mouth to suck. "What're we gonna name them?" Griffith asked, admiring his boys.
